The squirrel is Pteromys momonga or Japanese Flying Squirrel. A little information from The Red List:
This species is endemic to Japan, and is found on Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu (Abe, et al., 2005).
This species inhabits forests, from montane to subalpine zones (Abe, et al., 2005).
The cute Japanese native squirrel is not currently threatened but is not often seen as it lives at high elevations.
A laugh and an “awwww, how cute”, I believe my work here is done!
